Usually we write about specific sandwiches or food items, but I wanted to share my experience at the opening of a brand new Chick-Fil-A restaurant.

We are all familiar with the famous Chick-Fil-A sandwiches, they enjoy quite a cult following. In fact, the day prior to opening there were hundreds of people camped out in the Chick-Fil-A parking lot.* The first 100 that arrived won coupons for free "chickin" for a year. The staff at Chick-Fil-A set up games and activities to keep everyone occupied while the wait for the official grand opening went on.

Not so long ago it was in vogue for restaurants to present healthy meals to their customers. The low carb craze put a temporary crimp in donut and bagel sales. The Atkin's Diet was approved by the beef industry, and so on.

My, how things have changed. Now we are seeing more and more gluttonous products. Denny’s has just launched a new item on their $2-4-6-8 Value Menu. It’s the Fried Cheese Melt. This concoction is a grilled cheese sandwich with a twist. Four fried mozzarella sticks and melted American cheese grilled between two slices of sourdough bread. Served with wavy-cut French fries and a side of marinara sauce.

"Bigger is Better" sure seems to be the new catchy concept in the national chain sandwich derby. Carl's Jr / Hardees are now testing a foot-long cheeseburger. This burger comes on the heels of Sonic introducing their foot-long, quarter pound coney dog.

Carl's Jr. locations in California and Hardees locations in Indiana features the new foot-long cheeseburgers that boast three hamburgers, three pieces of cheese, regular condiments and at your request (plus .50 upcharge) lettuce and tomato. Yes, for just $4 you can get a foot-long cheeseburger. For your $4 you wil get a sandwich with 850 calories and 20 grams of saturated fat.

A quarter pound hot dog, that is a foot in length is obviously "big news".

Sonic Drive-Ins (3500+ locations) just in time to celebrate National Hot Dog Month have rolled out the Footlong Quarter Pound Coney Dog - a juicy, plump footlong hot dog topped with warm chili and melty cheese. The actual hot dog is a blend of beef and pork. Sonic believes that this product is reminiscent of summer picnics, baseball games and family gatherings.
