• Taylor Ham, Eggs and Cheese - White Rose System - New Jersey

We don't often feature breakfast sandwiches, but the Taylor Ham, Eggs and Cheese sandwich is just a regional institution we couldn't resist.

This sandwich is often referred to as the "Jersey Breakfast" although it's a great sandwich for any meal. It is featured at virtually every diner and greasy spoon in New Jersey, and occasionally at other restaurants in Manhattan and Philadelphia. It is a pretty regional offering.

Taylor Ham, is actually a product called Taylor Pork Roll. it was developed in the 1800's by none other than John Taylor in Trenton, NJ. Basically it is a sausage-like meat product that defies accurate description. Think Spam, bologna, smoked sausage or Canadian bacon and you will get close enough.

The Jersey Breakfast consists of a Kaiser Roll stuffed with eggs, cheese and topped off with the Taylor Ham, aka Taylor Pork Roll. (Note: originally called Ham, the product had to change it's name to comply with the regulations governing what could be called ham).

The sandwich has traditionally been served on a Kaiser roll, but now is often served on various types of bread including bagels (try it on an everything bagel, quite a treat).

The White Rose System in Linden, NJ is a typical New Jersey diner that many believe has achieved perfection in their preparation of the Taylor Ham, Egg and Cheese sandwich.

Just to prove what a strong regional influence this sandwich has had check out the video taken at a minor league baseball game in Lakewood, NJ - featuring the Lakewood BlueClaws. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=shD8lLUJFi8

How often do you see a sandwich featured in a in-costume foot race?

Enjoy the Taylor Ham, Eggs and Cheese, it's a Jersey thing!
